Ode to Autumn
Autumn beckons with the turn into the lunar seventh month. As the heat of summer recedes, the “yang” energy of earth dissipates and the “yin” energy gradually develops. More nourishing and succulent food should be consumed to counteract the cool and dry nature of autumn and this will also calm and purify the mind. In the same principle, spicy, strong flavoured, fried food should be avoided. “Qi” which is the body’s vital energy are crucial to our physical and mental well-being. “Qi” is concentrated in our lungs and hence with the seasonal change of the temperature and humidity, our lungs are especially vulnerable and subject to respiratory problems and allergies. Out of the five healing elements, metal is the one corresponding to autumn with white as the characteristic symbolic colour. It is recommended that autumn diets should focus on white-coloured foods like white radish, silver fungus, yam, white cauliflower, lily, pear to nourish the lungs.

秋季是指立秋后的七月,气温开始下降,自然界的阳气渐渐收敛, 阴气渐渐生发。秋季天气渐凉,气候干燥。以养阴清热,润燥止 渴,清心安神的食品为主。故宜吃些具有生津养阴滋润多汁的食品, 忌吃辛辣香燥,煎炸的助火伤阴之物。肺与秋气相应,秋季肺气旺。 “肺乃气之海,气乃人之根,人乃气之聚” 秋燥易伤肺,肺部也容受到温差变化的影响,易被疾病入侵,因此秋季是肺病及呼吸道过 敏疚病好发的季节,也是患者养肺的时节。秋季对应的五行为金, 金的代表色为白色,秋季养肺应食白色食物,白萝卜、银耳、山药、白花菜、百合、梨子等皆是滋阴润肺的食物。
